Justina M. Barnicke

7 Hart House Circle, jmbgallery.ca

Justina M. Barnicke went against stuffy academic stereotype with three innovatively curated and exciting shows. Funkaesthetics turned the space into a funk Shangri-la as iconoclastic as it was reverent. The collaborative show Noise Ghost, featuring Inuit artist Shuvinai Ashoona and local sculptor and painter Shary Boyle, was a no less inspired comparison of visual mythologies. More recently, three silent films by Mark Lewis were as much love letters to cinema as to the city itself. Galleries in universities are being threatened – another reason to support the Barnicke.
