Female Muslim voices

Muslim women need to be heard – in their own words. Enter AQSA Zine, a grassroots print zine as well as an online community (aqsazine.blogspot.com).

In Arabic, “aqsa” suggests “the utmost,” as in reaching out to the furthest possible point, and the zine aims to inspire Muslim women to do just that.

Aqsa was also the first name of 16-year-old Aqsa Parvez, who was murdered by her relatives on December 10, 2007, and Aqsa Zine honours her memory and all young Muslim women and trans people who experience and resist violence.

Hear Shadi Eskandani, Rosina Kazi, Golie and others at the Toronto Women’s Bookstore (73 Harbord) – host of a series of readings by the mag’s contributors – at Aqsa Zine’s launch tonight (Thursday, February 26). See Readings.
