In an odd way, the European Film Festival serves the purpose that the Toronto International Film Festival once did, putting the cream of international cinema on local screens, for local audiences. And the fact that all shows are free makes the “festival of festivals” concept even more democratic; just walk in off the street, and suddenly you’re in Cannes, or London, or Vienna, or ... oh, let’s say Helsinki. The weather’s about the same, by December.
