Note to bike riders: please ignore those signs on the TTC supposedly making it legal now to take your wheels on the subway. They're a hoax. An elaborate scheme hoisted upon the masses by deadfake.com, a site that allows users to send fake emails anonymously.
Annoying.
TTC cynics can perhaps be forgiven for falling for the fake commission presser that popped up on the news desks of local media outlets yesterday, NOW included, announcing the so-called Warm Welcome campaign by the TTC, a new "bike-friendly attitude" for Toronto two-wheelers.
"Starting today the TTC is replacing No Bicycles during rush hour signage at all of it's subway stations with what it calls a more positive bike symbol in a green circle displaying the times when bikes are actually allowed on the rocket," the presser stated proudly.
That the release spelled TTC chair Adam Giambrone's name wrong should have signalled transit critics looking for any opening to blast away, myself included.
The public is so used to the TTC rolling out meaningless, feel-good charm offensives these days – all to take our minds of a crumbling transit system – that it sounded just like something the TTC would do.
Ha. The joke's on us.
Still, that fake presser had one good idea – "bike priority" trains that would allow cyclists aboard subways even at rush hour. While we're t it, let's set up bike borrowing operations at every station, too.

Okay, no bikes during rush hour, but you can bring them on board at most other times, plus EVERY new bus we get now has a bikerack, meaning that the bus fleet will be 100% complete with bikeracks eventually.
Are you sure this is fake? How many such stickers are there? I've seen them at a dozen stations already. Maybe the press release is fake but the TTC has actually done this themselves without a big to-do. Seems like a nice cheap way to make the better way meet the best way!
