Meeting the city's artists one at a time

An artist profile of Jamiyla Lowe.

Describe your process of creating a piece. What materials do you normally work in?

I usually just work on loose sheets of paper with a brush marker, so all of my drawings are just black and white. With some of them I'll do color separations and make them into two or three color screen prints. I want to start focusing on doing more color work this summer and take a bit of a break from printing.

What projects are you working on? What do you have coming up, any shows?

I'm working on a set of prints, I have small editions of three of my images, which are available at Show & Tell Gallery on Dundas. I'm hoping to have two more finished by this summer. I'm also working on having a small show with my friend Adrienne Kammerer this September at Penny Arcade which is just a couple of doors down from Show and Tell.

When are you most productive?

When I'm not at my jobs?

What are some of your favorite spots in the city? Some favourite places to go, eat, drink, bike ride?

I like Dufflets. They have all the best treats. I like the Beguiling for comics and BMV for cheap books and vhs.

What are you currently obsessed with? Any blogs, pod casts, films, artists?

I keep watching the TV show Rome over and over again, for blogs I pretty much only read Dlisted. Artists I really like are Luke Painter, Kenneth Lavallee and Raymond Pettibon.

What is your survival food? Cheap eats for the starving artist?

Buy groceries, learn how to cook two things and eat them everyday. Or brown Sugar Bakery in parkdale, they have $2 sandwiches.

Any last words?

More drawings here.

"....for blogs I pretty much only read Dlisted."

That speaks volumes about your intellect. I stopped reading the article after that. Not interested in idiots.

Mikka, wow, what a ridiculous comment. You sound like a complete tool....

Deeming someone an idiot based on one word without reading the rest is really ignorant. On the other hand, making a decision based on their artistic output, rather than their guilty pleasure, requires a minimal mental effort and a risk of exposing yourself to scrutiny. The fact mikka chose not to speaks volumes about their intellect.

This is great work that shows talent, skill, excellent sense of composition, dedication, and thorough visual research. No small feat. With beautiful end result. Based on these drawings, you couldn't reach the same conclusion mikka did unless you yourself were an idiot.

I've been checking out your work and I think it's great! Can't wait to see what you're cooking up.

I agree with 'DELETE FRIEND'... mikka, you clearly cannot comprehend what it is you are looking at. I'm surprised that you even have the intelligence to operate a computer. You should actually try using your brain for once, not your ass, if there even is any difference. I really like your cat print..
