Dirty Solange
Beyonce's sister becomes even cooler

Beyoncé’s talented younger sister Solange looks like she’s got her sights set on becoming the next big indie diva.

No, we’re not talking about her leaving Interscope to “continue [her] path on a more independent platform”, nor are we referencing her assertion that she’d like to follow Bjork’s career path, although those are good indicators. This also isn’t specifically about her recent DJ gig at the xx’s afterparty in NYC, or about her dragging her big sister and Jay-Z to a Grizzly Bear show in Brooklyn.

Nope, the newest sign that the R&B singer is ready to trade mainstream aspirations for underground credibility is the cover version of indie darlings Dirty Projectors’ Stillness Is The Move that she’s just leaked on Pitchforkmedia.

Borrowing a guitar lick from Erika Badu (who borrowed it from Dr. Dre, who took it from Soul Mann & The Brothers’ cover of Isaac Hayes’ Bumpy’s Lament), Solange’s version takes the catchy indie soul song, and turns it into a genuine slow-burning R&B jam. It’s already been blowing up huge on the internet today, which bodes well for the singer’s hopes of finding an appropriate label for her next album.

It doesn’t look like Solange will be playing Toronto anytime soon, but you can always hit the Opera House this Saturday to hear Dirty Projectors playing the original. Last time they hit town, it was one of the highlights of their set, and they are one of the better buzz bands touring these days. Make sure you get there early enough to check out tUnE-yArDs, an excellent one-woman band (augmented with a bass player for this gig) that we were blown away by at Pop Montreal this year.

I just had the Solanges at my house replaced. They were doing the eaves troughs and downspouts so I figured they could do the solanges at the same time.
