Michael Hughes belts out some show tunes in Mickey & Judy.
Fringe

If you want this weekend’s LGBT festivities to continue, there are plenty of Fringe shows with queer themes – but don’t count on seeing many bare asses in leather chaps onstage.

Bekky O’Neil’s Cabinet Of Curiosities unpacks at inaugural Visual Fringe.
Fringe

When even populist fairs like the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition and Riverdale Art Walk are juried, the Fringe is taking a chance by boldly extending its uncurated, let’s-put-on-a-show philosophy to visual art.

Fringe

This year, the buzz around 14 Toronto Fringe productions starts with the venue.

Fringe

It’s that time of the year, when Toronto theatre- and dance-goers put on their running shoes, pack bottles of water to keep hydrated and snacks to munch on while standing on line.

Leora Morris, Hume Baugh and James Kirchner head to War.
Fringe

Here’s a piece of military history you’ve probably never heard before: a motley army unnerves its opponents by mooning them.

Chris Gibbs (centre) cleans up in The Soaps.
Fringe

If you’re familiar with Chris Gibbs – and what Fringe-lover isn’t? – you’ll be happy to know that a conversation with him is just like one of his shows: full of charming, amusing off-the-cuff remarks.

David Christo (left) and Eric Craig cycle through Godot.
Fringe

Most Fringe shows clock in at an hour or maybe 90 minutes, but this year two companies are testing the limits of audience and performer endurance. Dungeons & Dragons, (Not) The Musical allows audiences to observe an epic six-hour D&D game in action, while The Godot Cycle will doggedly repeat Samuel Beckett’s existential masterpiece non-stop for two mind-boggling spans of 30 and 54 hours.

Fringe

Whether he's sitting in the head honcho's seat or functioning as a private citizen, former Toronto mayor David Miller understands the vitality of the arts in Toronto.

Stephen Massicotte’s drama about a pair of mismatched lovers (she’s a well-to-do English immigrant, he’s a modest prairie farm boy) in 1920 gets a fine production that beautifully captures the work’s bittersweet, dreamlike quality.

Say hello to the next Michael Bublé. Michael Hughes’s show is a well-honed cabaret act with Hughes’s life story linking his tremendous performances of 15 famous show tunes. With much humour he tells how his parents tried to cure him of cross-dressing and his obsession with Judy Garland by sending him to the Clarke Institute. Only when he engineers a trip to New York City does he discover there are other people as mad about musicals as he is.

A street-savvy Korean immigrant (Paul Sun-Hyung Lee) runs his convenience store in Regent Park with his wife (Jean Yoon) while coping with neighbourhood gentrification, his unmarried daughter (Esther Jun) and the estrangement of his son (Ins Choi).

This tar-black comedic two-hander will work you over in about eight different ways. David Patrick Flemming and Caitlin Stewart (who also co-wrote with director Amos Crawley) give knockout performances as a deceptively comfortable young couple dealing with the aftermath of a raccoon attack.
