Thanks to French immersion, I was actually able to get some idea of how filthy Donzelle’s French Canadian rap actually was. Maybe not what my parents had in mind when they sent me to French school as a child, but thanks nevertheless.
If only I’d also taken Portuguese lessons I would have been able to enjoy it on even more levels. As far as the music goes, it depended on who she got the beats from for the most part – the Gonzalez rhythm she rapped over early in the set felt too indie-pop, but others contributed by fellow Montrealers Numero worked well, as did many of the beats provided by her DJ Sexy Chien.
As long as she keeps the booty bass and uptempo clubby material in the forefront, she’ll do well for herself (assuming the rest of the world doesn’t mind electro-hop in three languages).
