TFI tip
Every year, the Toronto Fashion Incubator wrangles a group of its most promising new talents and installs them, their clothing and their accessories at the Drake Hotel (1150 Queen West) for the Guilty Pleasures Breakfast. This year’s event happens Saturday (February 2), and your $35 ticket (available by calling 416-531-5042) gets you a three-course brunch and first dibs on shopping samples from Cha Cha, Green Shag and other TFIers. Between 2 and 5:30 pm, the sale is open to non-brunchers. Go to www.fashionincubator.com for a full list of participants.
Heart attack
Proactive sweeties already on the hunt for some Valentine booty (we mean gifts, not ass) can visit Mad Gypsy (405 Roncesvalles, 416-516-9054), where a collection of frilly, vintage lingerie is debuting just in time for V-Day. Also newly added to the shop is the Tokyo Firecracker line of retro fabric aprons and handmade parasols fringed in flowers. If used panties, cookwears or whimsical sunbrellas aren’t the way to her heart, the shop’s collection of wood, glass and metal jewellery is always another option.
All dolled up
Calgary’s Secret Society of Analogue Art has launched a doll makeover challenge called The Dollar Store Doll Project. Log on to www.dollarstoredoll.com to request one of the 100 giveaway dolls pictured on the site. A free doll will be sent to you in the mail, and you have until March 31 to make her over, snap a Polaroid and send in the picture along with a blurb about your revamped figure. The doll is yours to keep.
’Do dads
Picking up on this week’s Take 5 style surrealism theme, jewellery designer Shannon Hazell (www.shannonhazell.com) has added a collection of whimsical hair accessories to her line. Pieces include miniature hats made of polka-dot bows, mesh screens tied with black satin ribbons and feather hair clips. If you’re hunting for something a little more classic, our faves are brass headbands embellished with geometric scales, interlocking circles or fine leaf-shaped charms.
