HOT SUMMER GUIDE BONUS SECION | JULY 28 - AUGUST 4, 2005 | VOL. 24 NO. 48
out of town restaurants
Theres nothing like a small-town place to get a cold scoop or a runny butter tart. Here are some of cottage countrys select sweet spots.
Northumberland/Prince Edward
THE BEAN COUNTER CAFE (14 Elizabeth, Picton), 613-476-1718, www.beancountercafe.com
Its never been easy to get a properly prepared espresso in cottage country, but the Bean Counters trying to change all that. Locally made desserts shine, too, but the prize is 24 flavours of gelato made 0n-site, another rarity outside T.O.
Environs 905/Oakville/Hamilton/Burlington
GLEN OVEN BAKERY AND CAFE (520 Main, Glen Williams), 905-873-0940, www.glenoven.com
This is the kind of place that serves its sandwiches on bread made in-house, and the brownies are famous. Works by local artists are on the walls, a taste of whats on view at the artists studios and creative shops in the restored mill down the street.
Barrie/Collingwood/Midland/Orillia
SerendipiTea (244 King, Midland), 705-526-8327, www.serendipitea.ca
Heres a serious tea house featuring more than 52 varieties of tea, including 28 organic flavours and four decaf versions. Plus, high tea possibilities: traditional finger foods, scones and the must-have Devon cream.
Elora/Fergus/Kitchener/Stratford/London
MAPLETONS ORGANIC DAIRY (Wellington Road 7, Moorefield), 519-638-1115, www.mapletonsorganic.ca
Talk about natural. You can hang out with the cows whose milk goes into the organic ice cream youre sucking back in a crispy wheat or spelt waffle cone. No additives, no salt. Yum.
Niagara
AVONDALE DAIRY BAR (48 Lakeport, Port Dalhousie), 905-646-8263
Lakeside Park, where this venerable dairy bar is situated, also features a 100-year-old one-of-a-kind carousel that you can ride for just 5 cents. Climb on one of the hand-carved horses and then grab a cone at Avondale, winner of last years award for best vanilla ice cream at the National Ice Cream Retailers Association convention.
Peterborough/Kawarthas
Granys Home Baking (9 King East, Bobcaygeon), 705-738-3377, www.granyshomebaking.com
If youre one of those people who cant wait to get your hands sticky courtesy of a gooey Chelsea bun, this is the place for you. Granys does homemade salads, too, but its the sweets that made the place famous. Look for 10 different versions of the noble butter tart. Decent coffee, too.
