American Teen

American Teen takes us back to the gossip, cliques, parties, acne and rounds of spin the bottle that define a healthy adolescent upbringing. Depending on your own personal experience, this could prove nostalgic and sweet or vividly traumatic.

Nanette Burstein’s charming documentary follows five teens as they complete their senior year in Butt Fuck, Idaho (actually Warsaw, Indiana). The film fills in the jock/geek stereotypes – which date back to John Hughes movies – with real and articulate teens who don’t necessarily break the mould but bring it to life.

Unfortunately, the calculated editing manipulates the film into the same old high school movie. Twenty years have passed since The Breakfast Club, and the only difference between it and this documentary is that nobody passes notes in class; they just text.
