The One Man Village

Here’s an entry that creeps up on you. Semaan El Habre, director Simon El Habre’s uncle, raises cows in the abandoned mountain village of Aïn el-?Halazoun, Lebanon.

The expertly shot film tracks the farmer’s everyday life, which includes feeding and milking, coffee and conversations with former residents who now come to the town only to maintain their land. In the background of this mostly one-?man show looms the big city where Semaan delivers his milk and that’s drained the village of its people and vitality during military struggles with Israel.

A gem that features one of the festival’s most appealing characters, The One Man Village is a superb document of war’s impact on a changing countryside.
