Bruno
Sacha Baron Cohen’s shock tactics are ass backwards

The ads are right: Borat was so 2006. And so, I fear, is Sacha Baron Cohen.

For his follow-up feature, Baron Cohen has brought another of his Ali G characters to the screen: Brüno, the fey Austrian host of Vienna’s acclaimed Funkyzeit fashion television show. And he’s done exactly the same thing that he did with Borat.

Baron Cohen’s new provocation, Brüno, sends his wide-eyed character around the world on a series of awkward adventures, with director Larry Charles’s cameras capturing every prickly interaction and embarrassing faux pas.

Like Borat, Brüno attracts the curious and the publicity-hungry. Like Borat, he specializes in being obnoxious and testing the limits and patience of his unwitting marks. And like Borat, somehow he ends up sticking his ass in the camera about once every 20 minutes.

But unlike Borat, who journeyed across America to take advantage of well-meaning Middle Americans and to stuff Pamela Anderson in a bag, Brüno has no overreaching mission and no real purpose; he’s just there to lampoon celebrity self-absorption and unnerve unsuspecting passersby by being really, really gay at them.

I should explain that. In scene after scene, Baron Cohen and Charles throw transgressive images and suggestions at the audience, daring them to take offence. It’s shock comedy based entirely on gay panic. No more than five minutes in, we’re plunged into the bedroom with Brüno and his Thai dwarf lover Diesel, who engage in a series of joyous (if physically impossible) sex acts covered only by the same strategic black rectangle that appeared in Borat’s big wrestling scene.

It’s not particularly funny after the first 10 seconds, but it goes on and on and on – and if you don’t laugh, well, you must hate queer sex. Or Thai dwarves. Or Austrians.

Baron Cohen’s comedy is almost entirely based on trapping people in a room with a merciless exaggeration of a stereotype – the clueless journalist, the uncouth foreigner, the predatory homosexual. If he doesn’t get the appropriate degree of discomfort from his subject, he turns up his own volume until he does… which, in the case of Brüno, usually involves some manner of ass play.

To be fair, there was a lot of physical discomfort in Borat, too, but that movie balanced its outlandishness with some incisive cultural commentary, and its cross-country quest gave it a semblance of structure. Brüno’s just a wan copy, flying all over the globe in the hopes of landing on an idea that will pull the whole thing together.

And it never does.

For another view read I heart Brüno.

Terrible review. I saw you at the screening and you looked like a fearful old man. You must have been the only one in the theater to have not enjoyed the film.

when it coms to film reviews, I've found I generally cant trust NOW for anything comedic. This review is no exception. Stick to documentaries and I won't be complaining :P

people, people, people - check your grammar and/or spelling before posting!

i have not seen this movie yet, but i have a feeling Mr. Wilner is correct.

The guys name is "Norman Wilner", of coarse he hates it. Get this guy a pipe and a Vonnegut novel.

Now is usually wrong about these reviews, they have to be "on the edge". Every other critic loves it, 82% on RT.

Bruno was hilarious and shocking. I enjoyed it more than (what I recall of) Borat, because the Bruno character is more 'fun' in a way. Of course there's misanthropy here, but it's for a good cause.... Some of the scenarios are unbelievable. A couple gags run a bit long or fall a bit flat, but overall there's great entertainment and eye-opening value here. Watch my revue at www.youtube.com/gabndad

Hey, vah-ness-ahhh !

Don't mean to carp, but the first word in a sentence is always capitalised and I (not your "i") is a proper noun, so do spare us your righteousness until you can do it, too. Dummy.

remember, it's up to critics at such edgy and insightful institutions such as now, eye, village voice or the new yorker to build the new vanguards up and then tear them down just as quickly...

I haven't seen Bruno yet, but am intending to take it with the requisite grain of salt that usually goes with a surprise hit's second attempt. I still think I'll laugh and enjoy it for what it is.

That aside, I have also been disappointed with Now's movie coverage lately... Where is it finding it's writers? Loosen up! I didn't realize razor butt plugs were part of the job description.

Dear Mr. critic,

The whole idea of a funny movie, is to make people laugh and I DID laugh a lot throughput the movie. So I advice you to see a "classic" movie you should rent a copy of Citizen Kane or Titanic please.

...i am starting my sentence with non capital letter "i" just because I can...i love the movie, and we all know why alter media critics don't like this movie...because it's about.....................know wha' mean? wink, wink...cheers...

Well....too bad Sacha wasnt still some esoteric unheard of comedian from London. Popularity has its price with hipster psuedo-intellectual PC writers. But this..... this is absolutely one of the worst reviews I have ever read. The fact is Bruno is actually much better than Borat. On every mark, in every way, it is absolutely gut-wrenching hilarious. The fact that "The Hangover" some how managed to score a better review is actually pitiful and lends credence to the reality: Now Magazine is really a magazine for sappy PC yuppies. And yes, folks, even though, the ever-so 'intellectual' political-correct folks at Now Magazine are debating whether or not it was a "cultural commentary" is not even the worst of it. The worst part is they did not give Sacha the credit he deserves for basically ripping apart every single outlandish ridiculous stereotype held by every homophobic ignorant idiot everywhere the world over...but folks please dont let that stop you from laughing. Laugh at how 10 years from now, Now Magazine pathetically missed the mark on one of the greatest satirical comedies ever made. Poor souls. One N is just inexcusable.

This movie was serious art, and judging by the reactions it's getting, it is doing it's job to create emotion, opinion and debate. I was practically puking by the end, but I can appreciate the directness. Straight swingers are just as strange and terrifying as extreme gay predators. Why is watching physical love in a public forum more nauseating than watching two men pummel each other to death? Most Mac-truck message: we don't bat an eyelash at the constant T&A we view daily in the media, but a movie-size, porno-groomed penis is jaw dropping, not in a good way. I think we need more penises in our culture to counteract the T&A. Yup, this is a staight point of view. I wouldn't see it again without heavy drugs, but I am glad I did...way to go Cohen.

hey Kismet and Sachabacka1, LOVED your reviews and their lack of TTH (trytoohard) in making a BOLD statement... the simple truth is always the most compelling and YES the writers at NOW can learn a lot from it...

Do Cohen et al. really think or care about the social picture and/or commentary you critics demand with each movie created? What happened to humour for the sake of just trying to make someone laugh? I'm massively politically/socially/environmentally conscious, but fak, I NEED these types of movies to keep me sane! In this world laughter IS the best medicine

I'm willing to bet that even before viewing this film, this writer had a (basied) point to make. Did he not hear the many people laughing aloud while viewing ths movie, or was he too busy jotting down his "clever" observations? One "N"? Really? I surely won't be reading Norman's movie reviews moving forward.

Posted by BAH on 07/14/2009, 09:11 AM
I completely disagree with this review. This writer obviously has little sense of humour for anything "non-vanilla" in terms of Hollywood comedy. Loosen up Norman!

Hey if you are looking to see some hard hitting deep tear jerker, then this is not your movie. You need to take this movie for what it's worth, an in your face comedy. If you want you laugh uncontrollably to the point where you may leave your pants moist, then this is your flick. I loved it!

Nothing funnier than a man with a mullet teaching a gay Austrian how to defend himself from attackers with giant rubber _ _ _ _ s!!

Ish good, no? Mr. Wilnerhitzel needs to relax, cause' Bruno is here! Hello!

Posted by -TinkER- on 07/19/2009, 12:35 AM
Wow... Who knew people would feel so strongly about a movie where the story, character development and comedic baseline go no further than vulgarly stereotyped homosexuality and inappropriate use of high fashion.

Let this be a standing ovation to Mr. Wilner for not lauding the banal and retaining a persistent level of class before this degenerate piece of 'cinematic' toilet act.

1 n? come on. Saw this at the Revue last night, laughed my ass off. Great movie, very funny.

i enjoyed most of the bruno movie and laughed out loud a lot, most comedies aren't funny but you can count on cohen to crack us up -- sure the movie was gross and over the top and 60 minutes of it would have been enough but it still rates 3 stars in my opinion.

Posted by JG on 08/25/2009, 11:48 AM
I dont even like the Bruno charachter on the ALI G show, and saw the movie somewhat begrudgingly expecting it to be much like this reviewer describes. I actually found it better than Borat. Is there a formula there? Duh, but he does what he does better than anyone else. The movie is great.

This from the same rag that gave 30 days of night, what like 5 Ns? Seriously, get it together.
