By now, you should have decided whether you’re a Tom Waits fan or not (unless of course you’ve been living in the jungle for the last 30 years). The idiosyncratic American legend tends to provoke love or hate, as it goes with anyone who’s carved out such a unique niche.

Most fans didn’t get a chance to catch him on his recent Glitter And Doom tour, since it avoided most major cities and concentrated on smaller venues, so Waits has put together this live album out of recordings from various stops on the tour. The 17 tracks emphasize the latter half of his career, but he’s toned down his more avant-garde tendencies somewhat and injected a bit of R&B swing and jazz vibes.
For those still missing the lounge lizard storyteller of 1975 faux-live album Nighthawks At The Diner, there’s a second disc made up entirely of stage patter and monologues – a handy way of capturing that magic without unnecessarily breaking up the flow of music.
