JASON COLLETT

None of this album would be out of place on classic rock radio, which sounds like a dis but isn’t. It’s by no means self-consciously retro – well, no more than any countryfied pop rock. And while it’s never difficult, like his work with the Broken Social Scene, it’s still brimming with inspiration and unorthodox combinations of musical ideas.

There’s good understated playing throughout, strong songwriting and a casual, immediate feel that comes from recording an entire album in six days. It won’t change the way you hear music, but so what? At the end of the day, it’s the kind of album that’s incredibly easy to listen to. The more jaded among you might question the value of easy-listening rock, but once you get over trying to be cool you’ll understand the appeal.

Jason Collett plays Wednesday (February 20) at Supermarket.
