On their debut six-song EP, Hamilton’s Young Rival avoid the one-dimensional trap many garage rock bands fall into.

Sure, they can sneer lyrics, smash chords, shout in unison and crash cymbals as well as the rest of them (Your Island, Another Nobody), but they wisely choose not to all the time.

Poisonous Moves is slyly seductive, The Haunt shows off the band’s strong musicianship and 4:15 reveals singer/guitarist Aron D’Alesio’s tuneful voice and penchant for jazz chords. A laid-back 60s vibe weaves throughout the EP, which was recorded in New York and Hoboken by Emery Dobyns (Patti Smith, Antony and the Johnsons, Battles). The four-piece do keep one garage-rock tenet in mind: songs never exceed the 3:30 mark.

Young Rival join the Bicycles at Lee’s Palace Saturday (November 8).
