The Ghost Is Dancing
Battles On (Sonic Unyon)

Exuberant the Ghost Is Dancing have taken things down a notch on their sophomore release. Gone are the trumpet blasts, group-shouted choruses, too-many-ideas-per-song structures, Arcade Fire copycatting and barely contained chaos that came with having 10-plus band members.

The Toronto indie popsters are now a streamlined, refined six-piece whose reverb-drenched songs take thoughtful, dynamic turns and still contain enough youthful enthusiasm to keep things interesting (especially during live shows. Nudity, anyone?). Hooks abound, the production goes for epic, and lyrics are fuelled by hope. Now, if only Jamie Matechuk and Lesley Davies didn’t suffer from such serious cases of indie-rock-voice syndrome, his so generic, hers so twee.

Top track: Louis Riel

The Ghost Is Dancing celebrate their CD release at Sneaky Dee’s April 24.
