NOW's survey of T.O.'s best patios is organized by neighbourhood. To be extra helpful, we've included other notable restaurants in each area.
= Critic's top-50 pick
B = Barrier-free: When NOW labels a patio "barrier-free," it has at least one entrance where there are no steps, its tables are reasonably spaced and its washrooms are located on the same floor although they're not necessarily equipped with assistance.
Cabbagetown
Winchester Cafe 161 Winchester, at Sumach, 416-924-4362. A former ice cream parlour, this low-key eatery right on west Riverdale Park recalls Grandma's cottage, complete with doilies and antiques. It's only open during the summer, and locals like to keep this inexpensive dinner spot their secret, so don't tell anybody. Outside the antiques-clogged L-shaped dining room, a small, enclosed deck makes a quiet setting for pecan-crusted chicken breast sided with garlic mash or perfectly poached Eggs Benny with deep-fried hash browns at weekend brunch. Another even smaller deck out front overlooks a dog-walking park, Riverdale Farm and the entrance to a mausoleum. B

The House On Parliament Street 456 Parliament, at Carlton, 416-925-4074. An inviting below-street-level Ye Olde English Pub with accompanying terrace, this completely restored local hosts women's softball leaguers for après-game brewskis. Lots of inexpensive plonk by the glass, too.
Indie's 4 Amelia, at Parliament, 416-961-9748. Fiery Sri Lankan hoppers on a threadbare but licensed verandah.
Peartree 507 Parliament, at Winchester, 416-962-8190. Backyard getaway far from Parliament's bustle.
