NOW's survey of T.O.'s best patios is organized by neighbourhood. To be extra helpful, we've included other notable restaurants in each area.
= Critic's top-50 pick
B = Barrier-free: When NOW labels a patio "barrier-free," it has at least one entrance where there are no steps, its tables are reasonably spaced and its washrooms are located on the same floor although they're not necessarily equipped with assistance.
Danforth
Allen's 143 Danforth, at Broadview, 416-463-3086. Once through a New York-style saloon complete with a Wurlitzer jukebox programmed with golden oldies, find this celebrated fenced-in hideaway. Waiters in white aprons dish-up creditable burgers from the tree-lined terrace's barbecue while regulars guzzle a large cross-section of microbrews and 200-plus single-malt scotches.
Cafe Brussel 124 Danforth, at Broadview, 416-465-7363. With its recent move from around the corner, this long-time Belgian favourite retains its extensive mussel menu (served in the pots they steam them in) and imported European brew selection but adds a rooftop hideaway that overlooks the Boulevard of Broken Plates. Expect an art deco vibe, all burgundies, creams and contrasting black accents, and servers in regulation bistro gear – black slacks and vests, white shirts and white wrap-around aprons.
Katsu 572 Danforth, at Carlaw, 416-466-3388. The words "all you can eat" and "sushi" should never appear in the same sentence except when describing this wallet-friendly Japanese joint. From its congested curbside terrace, sample made-to-order slices of quickly char-grilled almost rare sirloin in sweet soy, deep-fried gyoza pork dumplings and crunchy, spicy salmon-skin rolls as well as salmon or red snapper sashimi at dinner. Warning: you're charged extra for what you don't eat.
Also notable
Athens Pastries 509 Danforth, at Logan, 416-463-5144. Super-flaky phyllo treats out front on a bench with a street-scene view. Unlicensed.
Coco Banana 1690 Danforth, at Coxwell, 416-406-0534. Wiggy island-style hideout for jerks who like jerk.
El Sol 1448 Danforth, at Monarch Park, 416-405-8074. Quite simply the best Mexican restaurant in town, El Sol's curbside terrace offers authentic way-south-of-the-border fare – pollo en mole, chile releno – and real-deal margaritas.
TEN FEET TALL 1381 Danforth, at Monarch Park, 416-778-7333. New spot with across-the-board menu.
