Debbie Does Dallas – The Musical and Hedwig the Angry Inch

No one watches porn for the plot, so once it’s clear that Debbie Does Dallas – The Musical adapts only the story (and not the nudity or sex) from the original 1978 flick, it’s up to conventional aspects of musical theatre to hold our interest.

Unfortunately, the expectedly  weak plot (Debbie and pals need to raise money so she can travel to Dallas to become a pro cheerleader) hasn’t been punched up and serves only as stereotype-heavy shoe leather between flaccid musical numbers that sub for sex scenes.

While Jason Franco’s suggestive choreography that packs in the sex jokes is funny if a little repetitive, songs performed to a pre-recorded track consistently fall flat.

Saving the show from downright boredom is Rodrigo Fernandez-Stoll, who consistently nails the required comic register as a batch of horny male townsfolk.

Things get better on the other side of this double bill when killer local electro-rock duo Vicious Guns make up the core of Hedwig’s live band, the Angry Inch. Grafting a live band onto a show can be hit-and-miss, but Richard Haydon (guitar) and Jenny MacIsaac (bass) totally rock as Hedwig (Seth Drabinsky) spins her glammy yarn about starting a band in America after enduring a botched sex change to escape East Berlin.

While Drabinsky’s German accent needs work (words keep getting lost), his energy and singing during full-on Bowie- and Iggy-inspired rock numbers is stadium-sized.

In the end, Hedwig beats Debbie, thanks to an intelligent plot that’s more than skin deep.

We sat next to Jordan at Saturday night's shows and we have to disagree with him. We enjoyed Debbie much better than Hedwig.

Had the chance to catch the show tonight after reading the NOW review. Familiar with both films (haha!), I was intrigued to catch the live experience. Debbie Does Dallas, what can I say? It was mundane at best, lots of simulated sex acts and poop jokes. If there was a smut transcending message/human realization moment in this messily performed "musical" it eluded me.

HEDWIG was magical. If you don't know what you are getting, watch the fabulous MOVIE based on the original NYC off broadway punk rock glam production. Great performances from the entire cast. Seth Drabinsky and LA Lopez were amazing lead characters in a show with many highs and lows highlight by the intense music of the live band. This is a musical but also a true rock and roll show. LIke going to a club where you see an absolutely amazing band playing GREAT tunes but there is a superb story to go along with it. I think the fact the the band was a REAL band (The Vicious Guns who are from Toronto) combined with actors made is an extremely authentic experience. The cast really rocked out. Entertaining, gripping and ROCKING!!!!!!!!! An absolute great rendition of the show, totally did the original HEDWIG justice.

sorry for subjecting you to a rock n roll show, teena. we'll make sure to warn you of future performances so you can remain safely on your couch.

Steve: I've seen many many musicals ("We Will Rock You", "Rocky Horror Show", "Hair", etc.) and loved them. So your response to my comment was rude and uncalled for. The drummer in "Hedwig", though very good, was loud and we couldn't understand much of what Hedwig was singing since she was overpowered by the band. I am interested enough to rent the movie to see what I missed. "Debbie" was light and fun and we enjoyed it more than "Hedwig". The Theatre Centre is a great place to see plays.

And as for your comment on my blog, if you are going to leave nasty ones, at least have the balls to stop hiding behind your computer and not leave anonymous comments.

i just copied what someone wrote on the facebook invitation because i thought it was hilarious. feel free to rant about how much you enjoyed debbie more than hedwig, it just makes your lack of intelligence and taste that much more apparent.

Good one, Steve. At least I'm intelligent enough to come up with an original thought ... I don't have to steal someone's like you did.

There were a lot of sound problems during the first few shows. We went back last week and all of that has now been fixed and the balance is MUCH better between the band and Hedwig. Do go and see Hedwig. It will blow your mind!!

Hedwig was amazing!!! I've seen it 3 times. And the coolest thing about it is the cast is so cool and sticks around to talk to everyone after the show. Seth is magical truly an actor who will dominate toronto and L.A. was so lovable and breath taking (Had has amazing pipes I wanted to cry everytime she sang out of pure joy!) that meeting them after the show they were so humble it was so charming. I am going again, and I wish it ran longer because it would go every week. P.S. my favorite part was when L.A. comes out as a woman at the bows and is stunning, I'm am a man in love. GO SEE IT! This show will change your world!
